5 Tips From Professional Web Design Experts

The goal of every web designer is to create sites that are inviting, easy-to-use and guide the user to what they are looking for. While getting this just right for each site will be a different challenge each time, there are a few universal tips that professional web designers always follow.

Create a Professional and Polished Logo

A logo is a critical element of any brand. Either create an appropriate logo from scratch or ensure that the existing logo is suitable and polished enough for use on the site. A website should display the owner’s logo prominently on each page. It is also a great idea to use the logo as a link back to the site’s homepage for easy navigation.

Make Navigation Intuitive

Nothing turns visitors off of a site like poor or confusing navigation. People are looking for sites that allow them to move around intuitively to find what they are looking for, as opposed to needing to spend time and effort searching for it. Your site layout should be constructed with the user in mind at all times. It is ideal to have the most important links in a horizontal bar across the top of the homepage, so that the user can go directly from the landing page to what they are looking for, while keeping the less important links in smaller font along the bottom of the page.

Avoid Clutter

It is very easy to overload a page with images and information to the point where the user becomes overwhelmed by all the options. Ensure that each page has a single call to action and only the most necessary information and images to support that call. It is also important to keep any paragraphs short, so that the user can get exactly the information they need to follow the call to action.

Leave Space

Leave enough space between the key elements of each page so that the user has some room to absorb everything that is essential to your call to action. The heavy use of white space allows you to focus the attention of the user on the key content of each page and to control user flow.

Use Color Strategically

Use a generally neutral color palette to ensure that the site has a clean, elegant and modern appearance. Muted backgrounds allow you to use key splashes of more pronounced colors to draw the user toward the main features of each page. Also be sure that your color palette is consistent with your logo and any other marketing materials that the site may feature.

Thanks for the great tips! I do have a question however that I think you could
probably answer. I was wondering, How much should I charge for freelance web design?
Lets say this website is on the high-end side
in design quality with no custom graphics etc.,
just the actual custom web design. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Wow, that’s a tough question 🙂 The biggest challenges of any small business are determining what to charge and what the market will bear. I would definitely need more info about your skill set and what you offer your clients before helping you determine how much you should charge. Are you experienced, are your clients local, do you meet face to face, do you build the websites yourself and what do you bring to the table that’s different than other web designers? Let’s face it, we’re living in a world where almost everything can be outsourced so as web designers we need to bring A LOT to the table. Cheerio and best of luck to you!
